Book of Knowledge Villagers and Heroes

Chapter 2: Introduction (2)

The villagers began to disperse when Adam decided to look around and ask a few things to Castro, the village elder. Adam didn't like what he heard earlier, but there was no reason to panic… not yet, anyway.

Since the people began to live their lives, Adam had the chance to see everything around him. While the houses around were pretty rough and straightforward since the people there only had a basic knowledge of carpentry, everything seemed relatively new.

"Well, tell me everything I need to know," Adam said. "It would be helpful if you could summarize things."

"Very well," Castro said. "We are fully aware that it is part of our job as your servants to explain how things work around here."

"Is that so? It sounds like I am not the first that was summoned by you people," Adam said.

"Yes, all the villages and towns have the power to summon heroes to guide and protect us against other heroes," Castro said. "Since ancient times, our people have been summoning heroes since this is a dangerous world and we need a strong leader. That is why we are constantly at war against each other, to find and strengthen the true hero."

It seemed like a pretty stupid thing to do. Why not work together? Adam would understand if they gave up on democracy after trying. Still, it seemed pretty stupid to give up before even trying. Regardless, Adam learned summoning heroes is something normal in that world. The people of a villager only need to reunite and claim for one. There were no gods or goddesses involved. At least Castro never heard of one.

"What happened to your last hero?" Adam asked.

"We don't know for certain, but it seems that after investigating a possible target, he fell in love with the enemy, and she used that chance to kill him," Castro replied.

Adam facepalmed. Killed for skirt-chasing seemed like the most stupid way to die. Still, at least that made him realize that the other heroes weren't superhuman beasts. So he had a chance, even though his class was called Fake Hero.

"Do you know for how long all of this has been happening?" Adam asked.

"According to some registers, it seems that things have been like this for five hundred years," Castro replied.

Half of a millennium where heroes have been killing each other. What were the chances of Adam stopping all that? Close to none. Adam could always run away, but he changed his mind for the time being when he reached the East side of the village and saw some red boars eating grass in the distance. Their numbers in that region were quite something, and it was even more surprising that they didn't try to attack the village.

"What are those?" Adam asked.

"Monsters, they usually stay away from places that have high concentrations of people, but heroes use them to gain strength," Castro said. "We use them for their meat."

"Their numbers aren't small, but… they certainly can't feed your village for more than a month," Adam said. "When one is killed, another one appears," Castro said.

"Such is the way of the world," Castro replied. "Isn't the same for your world? The other heroes we summoned said that monsters also appear like this the place they came from."

Adam shook his head. Even though it had magic, it was weird that any world could create creatures like that, making them appear out of nowhere. As for the explanation as to why the heroes worlds had the same thing, Adam assumed that they came from game-like worlds. It was the only explanation. Only in games do monsters appear out of nowhere like that. So either that or Adam was really inside a game, or the creator of that world made it with some really dubious rules.

"Do the heroes have a time limit or something?" Adam asked.

"No, we never heard of such a thing," Castro replied. "Still, recently, some heroes are surviving for quite a while and are become a lot stronger than usual, so it is only a matter of time for this village to become someone else's Territory. While we wouldn't mind being ruled by a powerful hero, we would like to be ruled by someone summoned by us."

Adam couldn't see the difference. If it was a question of pride, it made even less sense. In any case, Adam had read stories and played games where the main characters were summoned to save a world, but that was the first to conquer a planet. Still, it was better than something as boring as defeating the demon king. That being said, fighting to kill other humans for conquest also seemed a bit messed up… for someone lazy like Adam.

"I am not sure how to feel about all this…" Adam said. "In any case, I am going to fight those red boars and see if I can actually do anything in this world. Do you people have armor or shields?"

"We don't have the tools or the materials to produce those, but we have some leather armor that can offer you some protection," Castro said.

Adam didn't like that idea, but it was better than fighting the red boars with his uniform. So while Castro went to grab the leather armor for Adam, he checked his status and weapon, and this time, he got another surprise.

Ethereal Dagger (Mythological)

"Hmm, why didn't I see this before?" Adam rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

A dagger didn't seem the best weapon to face a boar-like that, but Adam was quite curious to see it in action.. Not to mention, the weapon was too weak to be a Mythological weapon… perhaps its power was related to that SP bar that Adam could see.
